The 2025 World Para Powerlifting Championships
will take place from 9 to 18 October in Cairo, Egypt, marking the first-ever
edition of the event in Africa. The Championships are set to feature a record
number of athletes and nations, highlighting the sport’s rapid global growth.
The competition will open with the Rookie &
Next Gen events on 9–10 October, held over two days for the first time,
featuring 124 athletes from 28 National Paralympic Committees (NPCs) —
including 88 men and 36 women. Uzbekistan leads the entries with 26 athletes,
followed by host nation Egypt with 21, while Iran and Armenia each enter eight
lifters.
The Elite Championships will run from 11 to 18
October, bringing together 542 athletes from 71 NPCs. Egypt leads participation
with 34 athletes, followed by Brazil (25), China (23), India (22), and
Uzbekistan (22).
A total of 20 individual bodyweight categories and
three team events are included in the competition schedule. The field shows a
strong gender balance with 314 male and 228 female athletes.
Compared to Dubai 2023, participation in the
Rookie & Next Gen events has increased by over 100 percent, rising from 58
to 124 athletes.
Team Iran will compete in both men’s and women’s
divisions, across junior and senior categories, aiming to continue the nation’s
strong legacy in Para powerlifting on the world stage.
