Iran NPC,
Tehran:
Ernesta Strydom,
serving as International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Technical Official for
observing the 2025 Iran Para Athletics Club Competitions for the Field Events,
praised the country's efforts for organizing the events and athletes' growing,
in an exclusive interview with the National Paralympic Committee of Iran.
Having observed
Iranian Para Athletics events on three editions, Strydom shared her impressions
of the recent competitions: "I recognized many athletes from the two
previous editions and was delighted to see so many young and new people with
disabilities getting into sport. It shows that Iran has been actively
developing and identifying the talents during recent years, which is very
promising."
She recalled the
story of a young athlete, Parastoo Habibi, who competed in Iran’s 2023 events
and went on to win a silver medal in the club throw at the Paris 2024
Paralympic Games — a discipline which women have historically had less
representation.
"These
achievements and medals showcase the value of national competitions. Such
events play a vital role in preparing athletes for success at regional, global,
and Paralympic levels," Strydom emphasized.
She also
commended the overall atmosphere and structure of the 2025 edition. "Iran
is truly a model in organizing such events. The enthusiasm at the championships
was remarkable, and the unity and energy among athletes was inspiring. I will
definitely take this model back to South Africa and apply it in our national
events."
Commenting on
infrastructure improvements, Strydom mentioned: "The venue facilities have
significantly improved compared to previous editions — from the Field
conditions to general amenities. Another highlight of this year’s event was the
strong presence of female athletes.
Globally,
women’s Para sports still face challenges such as limited participation,
facilities, and equity in many countries. One effective strategy, especially in
countries like Iran, is consistent holding of national-level competitions for
women."
"Organising
coaching courses and advanced training workshops are considered effective
strategies for strengthening Paralympic sports. Another clear sign of Iran’s
progress in Para Athletics is the development of training qualified female
coaches.
I was pleased to
see several skilled women coaches here and truly enjoyed observing how they led
their teams," she added.
"Iran has
achieved many successes in Para Athletics at Paralympics, Para Asian Games and
the Worlds, thanks to its talented athletes and their growing
performances," Strydom said, adding that while there’s still more to be
done for broader nationwide growth, she concluded: "Surely with the
National Paralympic Committee of Iran's vision, the path ahead will be even
more promising."
The 2025 Iran
Para Athletics Club Competitions for the Field Events were held under IPC
supervision on Wednesday, May 14, and Friday, May 16 in Tehran, featuring
competitions in both women’s and men’s divisions.
