Iran’s para powerlifters opened their campaign at the Oran 2026 Para Powerlifting African Open Championships in strong fashion, with both Alireza Izadi and Madhieh Mohammadian securing double-medal performances on the opening day in Algeria.
Iran NPC, Tehran - Competing in the men’s up to 59kg category, Alireza Izadi completed three successful attempts with lifts of 178kg, 181kg, and 183kg, earning the bronze medal in the lift.
He also claimed the overall gold medal with a total of 542kg, giving Team Iran a strong start to the competition.
In the women’s up to 55kg category, Mahdieh Mohammadian delivered an impressive series of lifts, successfully recording 95kg, 102kg, and 105kg on her three attempts.
She finished with a total of 302kg, securing the bronze medal in the lift and the silver medal in the overall standings.
The Oran 2026 Para Powerlifting African Open Championships brings together more than 150 athletes from 20 countries, including 92 men and 59 women. Fifteen African nations are joined by five delegations from outside the continent—Bahrain, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, and Kazakhstan.
Host nation Algeria leads the participation list with 27 athletes, followed by Egypt (20), Iran (16), and Nigeria (13).
